Be Wiser News:

Are Women Drivers Smarter Than Men?

Tuesday, 21/04/2009

As the credit crunch hurts our pockets and we try to stretch every pound as far as it can go, what can we do to save even more cash… maybe we need to look to women?

The age old argument of “Men vs. Women: Who are the Better Drivers?” has raged on for many years, but in the current climate of money saving and rising fuel costs, driving should not be an issue of who’s ‘better’, but who makes better use of their petrol tank on the roads.

We all know that petrol and diesel are expensive. It costs on average £43 to fill up a tank to the brim and depending on how you drive, it can be gone within a matter of days. In times where money is tight, driving and fuel efficiency are paramount in making your petrol go that little bit further.

Studies show that women are more aware of their fuel consumption than men and are therefore more efficient with their driving. For example, the reports noted that men are more inclined to stay in a certain gear for longer, whereas women tend to climb gears faster so the engine doesn’t work as hard. Women’s braking is also known to be less aggressive and kinder on their vehicle, adding to their fuel efficiency.

The findings also suggest that women are better at route and journey planning than men on a daily basis, contributing toward their ability as drivers. Researchers found that women are more likely to make one well-planned trip and include a multitude of day-to-day tasks, whereas men often fail to plan their route at all.

Mark Bower Dyke, Chairman of car insurer Be Wiser (www.bewiser.co.uk) said:

“Although the subject is somewhat light-hearted, it proves that women’s driving techniques are considerably better.

“Men tend to be more aggressive with their driving which results in the vehicle being ‘worn-out’ quicker, resulting in accidents and crashes.”

So maybe it is time men became aware of their expensive driving habits and start to drive more like women?

In a poll of 900 users taken on www.theanswerbank.co.uk for Be Wiser, 66% thought their driving style wasn’t cost effective and that it could be changed to be more efficient.

As we creep further into recession, maybe men should take a quick lesson from women on both driving and money saving. It’s certainly not a conclusive point on an argument that has existed since the birth of the car, but as times change and we all begin to feel the pinch, maybe men should swallow their pride and admit that women, for now, are ‘better’ at driving.
