This coming bank holiday could see some of the most congested roads this year.
Traditionally Brits take this final bank holiday of the summer as their last chance to enjoy any remaining sunshine.
Mark Bower-Dyke, Chairman of Be Wiser Insurance, comments:
"We all like the idea of just picking up the car keys and going if the weather is good. While appealing, it almost always ends in a traffic-jam."
This weekend plays host to several events across the country, including the Leeds & Reading music festivals. This may contribute to huge amounts of extra traffic.
The May bank holiday earlier this year saw a reported 15 million motorists hit the road in search of a British getaway; this week end is likely to see similar or greater levels of congestion. If you're heading to a popular destination, then there may be little choice but to queue.
Mark Bower-Dyke offers this advice:
"Planning ahead is essential. Before setting off it is advisable to check your tyre pressure, windscreen wash and coolant fluid levels - not forgetting to make sure you have enough petrol for you journey. Be prepared with alternate routes to overcome congestion "hot-spots" and above all else remain calm and relaxed at the wheel. Plenty of water, snacks and something to entertain the kids can take some of the tension out of a boring situation."
Last but not least is to make sure that you have Breakdown Cover - just in the case the worst should happen.
Mark Bower-Dyke concludes:
"If you're moving with the crowds to a popular destination, then leave early and be prepared to get stuck in traffic. After all, the bank holiday traffic-jam is a lmost as much of a tradition as the getaway itself!"
