Be Wiser: Avoid Red Cards On The Roads, Drink OR Drive

Thursday, 24/06/2010
Nearly half of those intending to watch the World Cup in a pub will be walking, according to a recent survey by Be Wiser Insurance.

Forty-six per cent (46%) of those intending to support England in the pub will arrive on foot.

Of those asked 33% said they would be watching in the pub while 30% would be watching at home.

Nearly two thirds (57%) of all those intending to watch will be drinking.

Mark Bower-Dyke, Chairman of Be Wiser Insurance comments:

“Walking to the pub or arranging a lift with someone who doesn’t drink allows you to get right into the game without having to worry about counting units.”

However, a third of respondents (31%) said they would risk driving and having a drink at the pub.

This comes at a time when the drink-drive limit is proposed to be lowered from 80mg of alcohol per 100ml blood to 50mg.

Mark Bower-Dyke continues:

“If you intend to drink within the legal limit and drive be aware of exactly how many units you have consumed. Remember, alcohol in your system from the night before can be enough to put you over the limit.”

At the last world cup in Cambridgeshire alone 155 drivers were arrested. This is 42 more than average, meaning a 37% increase in drink driving arrests around large football events. [1]

Mark Bower-Dyke concludes:

“The best bet you can make during this World Cup is avoiding the car altogether if you intend to have a drink – nothing could sour an England victory quicker than receiving a red card on the road.”
