Be Wiser Insurance Offer Advice on Choosing the Right Garage

Tuesday, 30/03/2010

Over 60% of people have experienced problems when taking their car to a garage, according to a poll conducted by Be Wiser Insurance.

The poll showed that for every motorist with a garage they trust there are two who believe they have been overcharged or had unnecessary work undertaken.

Mark Bower-Dyke, Chairman of Be Wiser Insurance, comments:

“Many of us have taken our car for a regular service only to be landed with an unexpectedly large bill for repairs which we’re sure weren’t necessary.”

The poll showed that over a quarter of people believe they have been overcharged whilst 36% believe that unnecessary work has been carried out on their car.

Mark Bower-Dyke comments:

“For those of us who aren’t mechanically minded it is easy to be “misled” by garage staff. Some road users may feel their car is being held to ransom while it is in for a service.”

Despite many feeling wronged, 38% of respondents believe they have a garage they can trust to carry out work safely and to a good standard on their car.

Mark Bower-Dyke concludes:

“While it seems like a mean feat to find a garage you can trust, it is possible. The key to being happy with your garage is to find a good one before you really need it – otherwise you may be leaving yourself and your car in a compromising position.”

Be Wiser Insurance Tips for Choosing the Right Garage:

Word of Mouth: Personal recommendations are the most important factor when choosing a garage. Those with experience of a garage’s service will more than be happy to tell you whether it is worth your time.

Check the Figures: Make sure any quotes you are given include VAT, parts and labour. Some less than honourable garages may leave these off the bill to sting you later.

Ask Questions: If you don’t understand why a part needs replacing, ask them to explain. Make sure you know exactly why work is being undertaken on your vehicle

Get to Know your Car: While it may be boring, the best way to avoid being “tricked” is to know your car. Spending a few hours with the manual will work wonders for you confidence at garages.
