Despite the condition of British roads getting better this week car insurance experts Be Wiser Insurance recommend taking it easy.
While the snow has cleared from many areas of the country this doesn’t mean the country’s roads are in a normal driving condition.
Mark Bower-Dyke, Chairman of Be Wiser Insurance, comments:
“Motorists may be forgetting that, despite roads being much more drivable, they are not in perfect condition. It is still cold and wet on the roads – in these conditions tyres offer less grip and brakes are less responsive. Had the conditions not been so bad in the last few weeks the conditions now would be considered treacherous!”
With the recent news that local councils and the Highways Agency are running low on grit it is possible that some less-used roads could be ignored so larger roads stay open.
Mark Bower-Dyke continues:
“Throughout the snowy period motorists have been extra cautious in an attempt to protect themselves (and their no-claims bonus!) in the difficult conditions. A sense of on-road camaraderie sprung up between drivers in hard times – now the snow is melting we have a different situation.”
Now that the roads have cleared some drivers are continuing as if the roads were in perfect condition. While the roads may be more drivable than they recently were, they are still potentially very dangerous.
Mark Bower-Dyke concludes:
“Treating wet, cold, and potentially icy roads as if they are completely clear is a dangerous mistake. Whenever there is a thaw followed by a cold evening black ice becomes rife – treating even “clear” roads with caution is the best way to assure your own safety as well as that of other road users.”
