As the world is in the grip of a global recession, insurance providers are urging their customers to take out comprehensive home insurance cover to protect themselves against burglaries, as the number of thefts has risen sharply since the economic downturn.
The number of incidents reported in past months shows a direct correlation to the blow the economic crisis has had on people’s jobs and pockets. History shows that when the unemployment levels rises so do levels of crime throughout the country.
Mark Bower-Dyke, Chairman of Be Wiser Insurance said:
“Unfortunately, it doesn’t surprise me to see a rise in burglaries since the recession has taken-hold; it is a very dark side-effect of the financial crisis, one that home owners need to be aware of and protected against.”
Even if you do have comprehensive home insurance cover, there are precautions you can take to minimise the chances of being burgled. Simple things such as securing doors and windows, locking garden gates and sheds and making sure your valuables are out of sight help deter chancing thieves from preying on your home.
Bower-Dyke went on to say:
“Comprehensive cover is vital in the current financial climate. I understand that people are trying to squeeze the most out of every pound, but not updating your cover leaves you very vulnerable in these uncertain times.”
According to reports, the most stolen items in a burglary are DVDs and games consoles, followed closely by cameras, computers and mobile phones. Updating your cover and securing the electronic items within your household would be a sound bet to avoid being hit hard by thieves.
It is estimated that over 10 million households in the UK do not have comprehensive home insurance cover, leaving millions of people and families at the mercy of thieves and their criminal activities.
Mark Bower-Dyke finished by saying:
“We could see a 50% rise in burglaries in the coming months, and without thorough home insurance cover people could find themselves in an awful situation if they’re targeted by thieves - it’s just not worth running the risk”
