Motorcyclists Shake Off Their “Speed Junkie” Appearance Says Be Wiser Insurance

Motorcyclists seem to be shaking of their “speed junkie” stereotype according to a poll by insurance experts Be Wiser Insurance.

Only 3% of motorists believe motorcyclists pose the most risk to others on the road. This is compared to the usual culprits, young drivers, who received 36% of the vote.

Mark Bower-Dyke, Chairman of Be Wiser Insurance, comments:

“Motorcyclists are sometimes known for being apparently reckless on the roads – but statistics like this show just how much respect normal road users have for them.”

Despite only making up roughly 1% of road users, motorcyclists suffer 14% of total deaths and serious injuries on Britain’s roads.

Mark Bower-Dyke continues:

“Motorcyclists are much more likely to be worse off in a collision. Because of this they are forced to be more aware and tend to be seen as more competent by other road users.”

The current THINK! campaign asks car drivers to consider the person riding the bike rather than treating motorcyclists as another road nuisance. Motorcyclists should take extra care to be seen by other road users.

Mark Bower-Dyke concludes:

“The biggest issue motorcyclists suffer from is not being seen. This poll shows that when bikers are seen they are usually treated with respect. Taking that extra time as a motorcyclist to make sure you’re seen could make a big difference”
