Motorists Avoiding New Car Costs - So How Do We Prolong Our Cars’ Lives?

Friday, 08/03/2013
Less than a fifth (17%) of British motorists are considering changing their car this year according to a recent poll by Be Wiser Insurance.

With the rising expense of motoring many Britons will avoid upgrading to a newer, more modern car because they simply can't afford it.

Mark Bower-Dyke comments: “In the current climate it’s not surprising people don’t want to outlay huge costs on a new, or more modern, car when their current vehicle is serving them well.”

With fewer people looking to change their car it’s important that people know how to prolong its ‘life’ and ‘health’. For those who want their car to last as long as possible Be Wiser has this advice to offer:

Drive ‘Nicely’: This means accelerating and braking gently along with letting your engine get to ‘running temperature’ before putting your foot down.

Clean and Wax Regularly: Cleaning and waxing your car regularly will help protect and maintain your car’s colour and appearance. A car that looks good will also be worth more in the future should you ever want to sell it.

Keep An Eye on Fluids: Oil, water, anti-freeze, power steering and washer fluid levels should be checked weekly. If you don’t want to check all of this then at the very least check the oil level each week.

Check Your Brake Pads: Replacing brake pads is not too costly a job, replacing brake discs and pads is! By making sure that your brake pads don’t wear down so much that your brake discs get ruined will save you money and hassle.

Annual Services: Everyone knows this is a must, but a lot of us don’t get our car serviced as regularly as we should. A change of oil and check-up will do your car wonders – and it could flag up any problems before they get too big (and too expensive).

These tips on prolonging the life of your car are applicable to cars of all ages, shapes and sizes. Doing just a few things on a regular basis should mean your car is less likely to let you down.
