Motorbike fanatics tend to relish the first Spring sunshine - especially those who keep their motorcycle as a fair-weather indulgence. But bikers should be taking the first Spring ride easy according to Insurance experts Be Wiser Insurance
Mark Bower-Dyke, Chairman of Be Wiser Insurance, comments:
“Those excited by the prospect of the spring thaw should remind themselves of a few safety checks before they hit the open road. Simple checks like tyre pressure, testing the brakes and taking it easy with the throttle are important for avoiding unlucky incidents.”
The department of transport cites the two most common factors contributing to motorcycle accidents in 2008 were “failure to look properly” and “loss of control”.[1]
Mark Bower-Dyke continues:
“Aside from the summer months, when the number of motorcyclists on the road is much higher, early Spring is the worst for casualties amongst bikers. Aside from the weather the biggest factors contributing to this are motorcyclists being a bit “rusty” after a long winter break.”
At the best of times it is much more dangerous being a motorcyclist. Motorcyclists are 57 times more likely to be killed or injured on the road than a car driver.[2] Because of this Motorcyclists should be especially wary of car drivers in the early Spring months.
Mark Bower-Dyke concludes:
“Considering the car driver when taking your motorbike out for the first time this year is important. Car drivers get a bad press when it comes to spotting motorcyclists. A winter with motorcycle free roads compounds this situation. Just remember that the first time you’ve seen your bike this year might be the first time anyone else of the road has too!”
