Monday, 17/05/2010

Speeding is the No.1 bad habit for UK motorists according a poll by Be Wiser Insurance

Over a quarter (25.35%) of motorists admitted to speeding as their worst habit on the roads.

Signalling and manoeuvres were the second largest bad habit for UK road users, with nearly a fifth (18.31%) admitting to undertaking, using the wrong lane, queue jumping and not indicating.

Mark Bower-Dyke, Chairman of Be Wiser Insurance, comments:

“While we should avoid letting “minor” lapses become habits, slipping over the speed limit or forgetting to signal can happen from time to time. Yet it is good to remember speed is factor in 25% of all fatal accidents.  Being aware and taking note of your own driving habits is one way to improve them.”

Vanity gets the better of many drivers, with 12% looking in the mirror or applying makeup while driving.

Playing with the stereo was considered another major distraction (16.90%).

Mark Bower-Dyke continues:

“By forward planning we can be prepared for driving and our destination, rather than dealing with how we look and what we’re listening to en route. Making a playlist and ensuring you look as you’d like to before you leave will allow the journey to be as relaxing and uneventful as possible.”

Road rage is another habit.  12% admitted to tailgating and honking their horn when angry.

Mark Bower-Dyke concludes:

“Being angry or distracted impairs your judgement and can lead to situation you’ll regret. Keeping calm and alert on the road is the best way to avoid accidents as well as allowing you to enjoy your journey!”
