UK Motorists Unprepared for Winter Breakdowns says Be Wiser Insurance

Tuesday, 22/12/2009

Of all the times to break down the winter period just before Christmas is probably the least desirable. With busy stressed-shopper filled roads and less than pleasant conditions there are better times for your car to give up the ghost.

Yet, despite this, only 7% of UK motorists consider breakdown cover a necessity this Christmas, according to a poll conducted by car insurance experts Be Wiser Insurance.

Mark Bower-Dyke, Chairman of Be Wiser Insurance, comments:

“Road users need to be aware that even the most prepared can suffer a breakdown – something no-one wants around Christmas time.”

The RAC Report on Motoring 2009 suggests that cancelling breakdown cover saves motorists around £57 a year[1], yet this saving can be a false economy.

Mark Bower-Dyke continues:

“Any savings made by cutting corners with car insurance or breakdown cover is always going to be a bad idea. Not only are you tempting fate but the costs of towing are very high – this is not something you want to factor in to your Christmas budget.”

On top of this the winter weather does motorists no favours.  The cold weather can lead to mechanical faults while also contributing to adverse driving condition.

Mark Bower-Dyke concludes:

“The most common winter breakdown is a flat battery , as batteries are particularly susceptible to cold weather; it is good idea to prioritize your car battery and radiator during the winter months. Luckily 27% of respondents suggested this was high on their winter preparation list.”

Be Wiser Insurance offer free RAC breakdown cover with every insurance policy to make sure your Christmas is remembered for the fun you had, rather than being stranded at the side of the road.
