Volcanic Ash and Strikes Forcing Holiday Makers Into Cars Says Be Wiser Insurance

Monday, 17/05/2010

Fifty per cent of holiday-makers would prefer to take their travel arrangements into their own hands rather than risk flying according to a poll conducted by Be Wiser Insurance.

With many flights grounded due to volcanic ash clouds and the announcement of nearly a month’s worth of BA strikes British holiday-makers are taking to the road.

Nearly a fifth (19.7%) chose driving as their preferred alternative to flying.

Mark Bower-Dyke, Chairman of Be Wiser Insurance, comments:

“While flying can be hassle-free, recent weeks have proven that when problems arrive they can be disastrous. This is why Brits are taking to their cars for their getaway.”

Respondents commented the uncertainty of being able to get home was particularly worrying.

Mark Bower-Dyke suggests there are some bonuses to driving to your destination:

“Driving on holiday can put you into contact with local culture which can’t be found if you’re simply dumped at the airport. Being mobile allows you to explore freely at your destination and en route.”

While driving abroad can seem daunting to some, it is much less stressful than is first imagined reassures Mark Bower-Dyke:

“If your car is in good condition, you have a map and you meet the various laws of European countries there should be few problems once you’re across the channel. And of course, remember which side of the road you’re supposed to be driving on!”

Be Wiser Insurance Advice for Travelling Abroad:

Check with your insurer before you leave to confirm you’re covered abroad

If you have breakdown cover make sure you’ll still be covered within Europe.

Have your car checked out before you travel. Long distances can find problems with your vehicle which have never been apparent at home.

Make sure your route is planned carefully beforehand.

If travelling by toll-roads at any point, it is worth having this money to hand

Double-check local road-laws; they can differ from country to country.

Make sure you have all your paperwork to hand.
