Caravan owners 'need to fully understand their policy'

Sunday, 26/04/2009

People considering going away on a caravan holiday have been reminded to check exactly what their policy covers them for.

Saga has made the suggestion after publishing research, which found that 32 per cent of the over-50s are considering going on such a jaunt this year to save cash and beat the credit crunch.

It also cited a study by The Caravan Company – which sells second-hand vehicles - which found that sales have risen by between ten and 15 per cent this year.

Novice caravanners could be "out of pocket", however, if they do not know that their vehicle does not fall under a car insurance policy.

"Worryingly, many motorists believe that if a caravan is attached to a car, it will be covered by the car insurance," it has said.

This is often not the case, the firm added – meaning that any damage caused to the trailer will not be covered.
