Does Road Rage Cause Drivers to Crash?

Monday, 18/01/2010

It really is extremely difficult these days to undertake a journey and arrive at your destination without having some form of confrontation with, or at least having your blood pressure raised, by another driver.

It is not surprising that according to a recent survey three in five motorists have been victims of road rage with 69% of young men aged between 18-24 most likely to be subjected to abusive road rage.

According to a recently national survey, when a driver gets the finger, is cut off or tailgated, 50% of the victims respond with horn honking, yelling, cutting-off, and obscene gestures of their own.

The survey also revealed that 34% of drivers say they would honk their horn back, 27% would yell, 19% give the finger back, 17% flash their headlights, 7% mimic the initial aggressive behaviour and 2% shockingly admitted to trying to run the aggressor off the road.

When it comes to road rage, 54% of men are more likely to respond in an aggressive way compared to 46% of women motorists. While drivers aged over 65 experienced the fewest incidents and were the least likely to get aggressive behind the wheel.

Road rage seems to be linked to congestion and stress, as most incidents occur in the busier towns and cities, which account for around 54%, followed by major roads and motorways accounting for 32% of road rage accidents.

Road rage is a two way street, so if motorists are subjected to aggressive driving often the best way to ensure it doesn’t get any worse is to just ignore it.
