Safety device wins award

A gadget designed to reduce the likelihood of traffic accidents and subsequent car insurance claims recently received recognition from Toyota.

The manufacturer handed Gentex Corporation an Excellent Award in the Technology category for its SmartBeam device.

Using a camera on a chip, the system automatically adjusts a vehicle\'s high beams in accordance with surrounding traffic conditions.

Gentex explained the technology is designed to improve road safety and cut out the "burdensome" task of switching the lights on and off.

Senior vice-president Enoch Jen said: "Toyota currently utilises SmartBeam on two vehicles in its line-up and we believe this award signifies their awareness of the added value that our technology offers to consumers."

He added the company expected Toyota to start equipping more of its autos with the device.

In other news, the firm recently announced its auto-diming exterior and interior rearview mirrors were to be fitted to Volkswagen\'s 2009 Passat CC.
