Motorists who do not want to jeopardise their cheap car insurance premiums may want to think twice before opting for cheap tyres.
A series of tests conducted by Autocar magazine have highlighted the potential shortfalls of such products.
The publication compared five budget brands - GT Radial, Wanli, Linglong, Nankang and Triangle - against a premium tyre from Continental.
It looked at dry and wet handling, braking, aquaplaning and driving at high speeds.
The Continentals were found to outperform the cheaper makes in all but one test.
When examining braking ability, the car fitted with Linglongs was still travelling at 27.8 mph at the same point it had come to a standstill when equipped with the premium tyres.
Jamie Corstorphine from Autocar commented: "We expected the bargain tyres in this test to fall short of the Continental, but we were not prepared for just how poorly some performed."
This comes after TyreSafe recently estimated some 3.6 million motorists in the UK could be driving on tyres that do not meet minimum legal requirements.
