WHAT IS BLACK BOX INSURANCE?
Black box insurance - also known as telematics insurance - involves a small device that is usually installed behind the dashboard or charging port to accurately monitor your driving. As you drive, the black box collects information about your driving skills. The insurer will be able to see if you're a safe and skilled driver, and therefore the information could help to reduce your premium at renewal.
Although young drivers typically use black box insurance, it's become increasingly popular amongst drivers with a few years of experience behind the wheel. Drivers of all ages are interested in black box insurance as it can help reduce your premium. Please note that black box car insurance is not appropriate if your car has been modified.
HOW DOES BLACK BOX INSURANCE WORK?
A black box will be installed in your car to monitor your driving style using specialist telematics technology. Some of the things it will monitor are:
- Speeding
- Braking
- Accelerating
- Sudden manoeuvres
Your insurer will give you a regular 'driver score' which will reflect your driving style. Your score indicates how safe a driver they believe you to be. You could be rewarded with lower premiums when renewing your policy if you consistently achieve a good score.
As the policyholder, you can easily check the driver score by logging into your account on the Drive Wiser Safe and Secure app.
