FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT CAR INSURANCE
Before you get your car insurance quote, we understand that you might want answers to a few key questions. That's why we've put together this list of frequently asked questions to help you.
At its most basic level, Third Party Car Insurance covers the cost of damage you cause to other vehicles or road users. The higher level of car insurance, Comprehensive insurance, can cover you for damage to your vehicle — even if it’s deemed to be your fault. You can purchase optional extras to add to your policy, such as breakdown cover and legal protection.
The short answer is yes.
To be considered legal to drive on the UK's roads, you need to have third-party car insurance as a minimum. Without it, you could receive a fine and penalty points on your licence and that may make your premium more expensive in the future.
Paying annually enables you to make a single one-off payment when you purchase your Car Insurance policy. However, spreading the cost over monthly payments can often be more affordable. When paying in monthly instalments, interest is added which will cost you more over the year, so it may be worth weighing up the two options to compare which is better for your budget. Be Wiser offers you the choice of paying annually or by monthly Direct Debit. Additional fees and terms & conditions apply. Be Wiser acts as a credit broker, not a lender.
While third-party is the minimum-level policy that you need, comprehensive car insurance offers the most robust cover. We've outlined the differences here:
- Comprehensive insurance means that you are covered for damage to your car, as well as for damage to another vehicle, person, animal or property. You are also covered in the event of your car being stolen.
- Third-party, fire and theft insurance offers protection for damage caused to another vehicle, person, animal or property. It also provides cover if your car is stolen or suffers fire damage, but not for accidental damage.
- Third-party means that you are only covered for damage to another vehicle, person, animal or property. You are not protected against any damage to your car.
Whilst cover to drive other cars is included in some comprehensive policies, you will need to check your insurance documents to ensure your policy insures you to do so. Please be mindful that some policies may include limitations, such as only covering drivers aged 25 and over or Third Party Only cover.
If you’ve checked your documents, and are still unsure if you’re covered, you can get in touch with us via Live Chat.
We're open at the following times:
Monday to Friday: 9am – 6pm
Saturday: 9am – 5pm
The Live Chat button will only show when we have agents available to assist you.
It's important that you check your documents to make sure that you know what is and isn't included in your car insurance. For example, many policies won't cover the cost of repairing the likes of:
- Modified engines, wheels or brakes
- Modified seats
- Tinted windows
- Personalised number plates
And a standard UK car insurance policy won't cover you for racing. For that, you'll need specialist track day cover.
It's hard to predict what your car insurance quote will be. The final cost depends on several factors, including the level of cover that you choose, the car that you drive, plus personal details such as your age, driving record and where you live. You can soon find out, though, by getting a quote online through us today.
No. As a valid MOT is a condition of most car insurance policies, it is highly likely that your insurance policy is invalid if your car doesn’t have one. Please check your policy documents for more specific information.
Providing you have informed us that you are changing your vehicle, both vehicles will be covered for the duration of the day (midnight to midnight) that the change of vehicles happens.
Both your old and new car will be covered for the day that the change becomes effective (even if this date is in the future).
If you purchased your policy after 21st November 2023, or it renewed after 21st December 2023, you can now change your vehicle online 24/7 in My Account.
Just log in to My Account and select 'manage policy', go to the "car" section and select "make a change". From here you can choose when you would like the change to be effective from and proceed with entering the details of your new vehicle.
There may be a change to your premium as a result of this change. You'll see a quote for any increase or decrease in your premium before you decide to proceed.
If you purchased your policy before 21st November 2023, you will need to inform us of the change of vehicle via Live Chat and we will be happy to help you.
We're open at the following times:

Yes, please let us know once the points have been added. It's important to note that, whilst it won't affect your premium for this year, it may have an impact on your renewal price.
You should tell us about any modification to your vehicle when you get a quote, or if your modifications change, as some modifications can affect your insurance premium.
A modification can be any alteration from the manufacturer's standard specification, including any manufacturer or dealer-fitted option, whether or not performance is altered. It could also include any other changes which could improve value, appearance, performance or handling.
This could include modifications to the vehicle's engine, suspension or body. Vehicles fitted with special equipment or apparatus will also fall into this category. The most common modifications include, but are not limited to, performance enhancements such as exhausts, bodywork or personalised paintwork, e.g. signage.
If your vehicle has been modified, and you purchased your policy after 21st November 2023, or it renewed after 21st December 2023, you can amend your policy online through My Account. Login to your account and select "manage policy". If you haven't registered for an online account yet, you can do this here.
Your premium may increase or decrease as a result of any changes you make, and mid-term changes may be subject to additional fees, as detailed in our Terms of Business.
