Be Wiser Insurance
The winter weather can make the roads treacherous for many drivers even those with plenty of experience. However, recent research by a leading high street insurance firm has revealed that around a third of the UK’s motorists are unsure of what to do when their car goes in to a skid.
A group of volunteers were put behind the wheel of a test vehicle and afterwards a third could not control the car during a skid situation. The group were then given some specialised winter driving tuition and retested. After the extra instruction it was shown that more than 90% of drivers were confident to handle a skidding vehicle.
It is vital that drivers are aware of how to control their car in adverse road conditions as on average the cost of an accident caused by a car skidding out of control is more than £1700. In addition, insurers commonly deal with around a quarter of a million such accidents every year.
A spokesperson for the company said: "It's important to drive even more safely and be extra vigilant and with another icy winter reportedly on its way we would encourage all drivers to make sure they know the correct way to handle their vehicle in slippery conditions."
