Clearing out the garage in order to make way for the car is one way drivers can save on their motor insurance policies, according to a top protection body.
If a vehicle is contained in such a way, it is less likely to be targeted by vandals and thieves - compromising a motor insurance deal as a result, the British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA) claimed.
The organisation added that keeping a car off-road in London was also far more beneficial than not. However, BIBA technical services chief stated that insurers are not always consistent in their risk assessment.
"Every insurer does have a different view on to what extent they should discount their premiums. But, of course, the theft and vandalism factor is so much less if it is kept in a garage," he said.
Having an industry recognised alarm fitted to your car can reduce your premiums as can having a record of good driving and no previous claims.
Other ways to reduce save money on your car insurance include, changing the value of your excess, opting out of special services such as a courtesy car or no claims protection. However, each action should be carefully considered as you may lose out in the event of a claim.
