If you can’t quite stretch to a new Bentley, how about its bespoke picnic hamper – which costs more than a family car

For some of the more financially fortunate, the idea of owning a Bentley isn’t quite enough. Matching accessories to accompany the make and model of your car isn’t unheard of, you can pick yourself merchandise from your car dealer if you feel inclined. But is the bespoke picnic hamper from Bentley may be taking things a little too far?

Ray Massy, The Mail Online, reports:

If you can’t quite stretch to the £160,200 showroom price of Bentley’s dramatic new Bentayga off-roader, how about its bespoke picnic hamper which costs more than a family car?

For super-wealthy owners with deep pockets, the British luxury car-maker has created a sumptuous hamper set costing £22,000 that fits snugly into the boot of its awesome new 187mph 4X4 and promises a right royal feast.

Already more than 100 customers have ordered the Linley Hamper by Mulliner accessory which has been designed by the Queen’s nephew Viscount Linley who trades as furniture maker and designer David Linley.

It was launched, along with Bentley’s first ever off-roader, at the official global launch in Palm Springs California of what the firm claims is ‘the most powerful, luxurious, and exclusive sports utility vehicle in the world’. More than a quarter (28 per cent) of all Bentley sales are in the USA making it a huge export market for the UK luxury car maker owned by Germany’s Volkswagen Group.

The hamper set comprises three hand-trimmed compartments built into the boot of the luxurious sports utility vehicle – already dubbed an SU-VIP’.

One hamper contains bespoke fine Linley china crockery, silver cutlery and crystal glass, the second is an illuminated cooling compartment, for champagne, chilled drinks and glasses, while the third carries food, dry goods and a sumptuous Mulliner cashmere picnic rug.

Such is the attention to detail that each champagne glass base is created to look like a five-spoke Bentley wheel. Bottle stoppers carry the winged ‘Flying B’ Bentley logo.

Each hamper is also trimmed in diamond-quilted leather and has a practical cushioned top allowing them to be used as outdoor seats. For less than the £22,000 cost of the hamper you could buy a Volkswagen Golf 1.4TSI for £20,900, an Audi A3 1.2 TFSI for £20,965, a big Skoda Superb 1.6 TFi CR SE Business at £21,590, or a Ford Mondeo 1.5 Ecoboost for £21,460.

The exterior of all three compartments are hand-trimmed by Mulliner’s experienced craftsmen in Belugahide. Customers have a choice of hamper interior hide-colour hues: Camel, Hotspur, Linen, Magnolia or New Market Tan. There’s even a bespoke embroidery service should you wish to stitch your name, logo or family crest into a specified section of the hamper.

Bentley says: ‘The Linley Hamper by Mulliner is equipped for something more akin to fine dining. One of the compartments is equipped with the finest crockery and cutlery. Plates, cups and saucers are sourced from the Sublime Collection of Havilland, the renowned French porcelain maker. A modern collection that elegantly combines the radiance of white porcelain with delicate decoration.'

Picnics don’t have to scream luxury, surely it’s more about spending time with people you care about on a lovely spring or summer day, with finger food and maybe some fizz if you’re feeling fancy? Well, if you’re driving around in Bentley, the standards have now be well and truly upped, and this picnic hamper will ensure you’re eating like royalty.
