Volkswagen (VW) has announced the launch of the new Golf GTI concept, describing it as faster, sharper and cleaner than its predecessors. It said the core attributes of the original Golf GTI - namely its practicality, style and dynamics - will be retained. But the new vehicle will boast new chassis technology and progress in drivetrain which aims to enhance the purity of the driving experience, rather than detract from it."The GTI concept is intended as a first step towards the Golf GTI which will start production in spring 2009," the manufacturer said.Buyers with car insurance will have to wait a little longer to pick up the vehicle, with sales expected to start in the UK in early summer, with prices and more complete specifications announced around this time.To coincide with the unveiling of the new concept, VW has published an overview of the history of the Golf GTI, from the introduction of the first one at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1975 to the Mk V vehicle launched in 2004.
