The new £12 million Tapeta racetrack at NEWCASTLE, which opened in May last year, stages its third and final Fast Track Qualifier of the season on Thursday when a high class field prepares to go to post in pursuit of a guaranteed place in Good Friday’s Sprint Final. Among the entries are Godolphin’s 2014 Champion Pretend and the speedy Gracious John, who has been back to his best at Lingfield and at the North East track in recent starts.

IN FORM O’MEARA TOPS TRAINERS’ TABLE

York trainer DAVID O’MEARA completed a big race double at Lingfield Park on Saturday to begin the week just one winner clear of David Evans and John Gosden in a thrilling battle for the All-Weather Champion Trainers’ title. Coillte Cailin and Alfred Hutchinson’s victories secured the former jump jockey an enviable 20% strike rate and both now look set to play a part in the £1 million Finals Day on Good Friday.

KIRBY IN POLE POSITION

Former winter champion jockey ADAM KIRBY shot five clear of his nearest rivals with a win on David O’Meara’s Alfred Hutchinson in Saturday’s feature mile handicap at Lingfield Park. The Newmarket based rider, who was runner-up to Luke Morris last season, has struck up a productive association with the veteran, having finished second on him twice before securing this valuable prize.
