Nearly half (45%) of British motorists consider the dazzling effect of low sun to be the biggest concern for driving in the autumn, according to a recent Be Wiser Poll.

Mark Bower-Dyke, Chairman of Be Wiser Insurance, comments:

"Low visibility can be a real risk - and more of a concern now that the schools are back. The biggest problem is often a dirty windscreen refracting light in a way which can be dazzling."

A similar poll conducted last year saw nearly three quarters putting autumn dazzle at the top of their list. The drop this year can be attributed to a higher concern for other road users.

This year just over a third (37%) considered other road users not being prepared for the seasonal change to be the biggest danger, despite the fact that only 12% considered these changing conditions a problem for themselves.

Mark Bower-Dyke comments:

"The biggest changes can occur in autumn. By winter time everyone has adjusted their driving for the cold weather with increased braking distances and lower speeds all round. Currently everyone is adjusting from perfect road conditions to wet or even frosty roads - often overnight. Anyone who has considered the change in weather will alter their driving and it's natural to be concerned that others haven't."

Being prepared for sudden changes in the weather is easy; Mark Bower-Dyke offers the following advice:

"Ensuring you top up your windscreen wash and have a high quality pair of sunglasses can ensure you've always got the best visibility. Doing a few basic checks of the tyre treads hardly hurts either. It's well worth spending a little time this weekend making sure you and your car are prepared for the coming colder months - while we've still got a little bit of sunshine!"
