With the weather warming up, motorcyclists are keenly watching road conditions to be safe enough to get out on to the open roads again.

However, there is more to enjoying the first ride of the year than good road conditions, warns Be Wiser.

Mark Bower-Dyke, chairman of Be Wiser Insurance, comments:

"Safety starts on the driveway rather than on the road."

Motorcyclists are looking out for warmer weather without frost, high winds or rain.

Mark Bower-Dyke continues:

"But this isn't all motorcyclists have to worry about. Basic checks can mean avoiding that awkward sensation of something "not being right" once on the road. As much as anything this preserves the joy of the first ride of the year!"

Riding for pleasure can be expensive, especially with rising fuel costs, which is all the more reason for making sure every ride has the potential to be completely enjoyable.

Mark Bower-Dyke advises:

"Making sure your tyres are properly inflated to the correct pressure with plenty of tread can make a huge difference to your comfort on the road. It is also a really good idea to check your brakes work before you need them, for obvious reasons. And finally, don't thrash the bike immediately as, even if the bike is kept in pristine condition, you might be a little rusty!"
