A fifth (21%) of British motorists would call family members rather than their breakdown cover provider, especially if the problem could be described as "embarrassing".

Mark Bower-Dyke, chairman of Be Wiser Insurance, comments:

"It's embarrassing to run out of petrol or to not be able to change a flat tyre and it appears that many motorists would be embarrassed to call out their Breakdown service company  for such perceived trivial matters. On the other hand calling a friend, while nearly as embarrassing, is apparently less of an issue to many motorists."

Other reasons cited were distance of the breakdown from home and the simplicity of the job. The closer to home and easier the job, the more likely friends or family would be called.

Mark Bower-Dyke comments:

"We always advise that motorists should be able to perform basic car maintenance such as checking oil and fluid levels, tyre pressures and windscreen washer levels. It is also a good idea to have read the car handbook so that motorists know where their spare tyre, locking wheel nut, and  jack is located in the car.. It isn’t always conducive learning any of these when you are broken down at the side of the road!"

If they were a long way from home many respondents suggested that their breakdown provider would be the first port of call.

Less than 1% didn't know who they'd call at all.

Mark Bower-Dyke concludes:

"We're happy to know that very few people would not know who to call if stuck in this situation. Be Wiser Insurance provides free breakdown cover with all our policies so we know that whatever the situation is our customers have always got someone to call."
