Be Wiser Insurance asked the UK motoring public whether they always remember to wear a seatbelt.

An unsurprising 95% responded that they always wear their seatbelt - but almost all those who commented mentioned the few occasions where they wouldn't.

Taxis, coaches and sometimes minibuses were all occasions where respondents admitted to not buckling up - somewhat undermining what is a reassuring statistic about road travel.

Mark Bower-Dyke, Chairman of Be Wiser Insurance, commented:

"It's clear that nearly everyone wears a seatbelt all the time while driving their own car. Yet, when they're in a form of public transport and someone else is driving that they become more relaxed about it. Wearing a seatbelt is culturally ingrained in some situations, but not others."

Wearing your seatbelt is important wherever they're available - even if you're just hopping in and out of a taxi in a congested city, where high speed collisions are less likely.

Mark Bower-Dyke continues:

"Most of us have seatbelt safety firmly drilled into us. Being vigilant about safety is important. Even small 'knocks' can be dangerous when you're not being secured with a seatbelt – statistically you're twice as likely to die in a crash if you do not wear a seatbelt."

Luckily, most people in most forms of transport do wear a seatbelt.

Mark Bower-Dyke continues:

"We're glad that the motoring public is committed to safety – we just hope we can all go that extra mile and buckle up 100% of the time."
