Nearly half (46%) of British drivers have someone else do basic maintenance tasks on their vehicle according to a recent Be Wiser Insurance poll.
Mark Bower-Dyke, Chairman of Be Wiser Insurance, comments:
"Basic tasks may seem trivial, but knowledge of them improves not only the general understanding of the car but it can also save you money in the long run."
Around a third (35%) of people polled do their own basic maintenance tasks such as changing oil, wiper blades and topping up water/coolant levels.
Many respondents commented that they were happy to do all the basics, and even much more advanced work, but often paid others to do it as they didn't have the time.
However, nearly a fifth (19%) of those asked said they don't know how to perform basic maintenance tasks but would like to learn so they could save on maintenance costs.
Mark Bower-Dyke comments:
"The biggest driver for wanting to learn these basic skills is money - but the benefits go beyond that. The ability to work out what is wrong with your car in a breakdown situation might be helpful - it could mean the difference between waiting for a mechanic to arrive or being able to fix the problem yourself. Not all situations can be prepared for though, so why not get your motor insurance from Be Wiser - it includes free breakdown cover for added peace of mind."
