Over half (56%) of British drivers want tougher penalties for those who break road laws, according to a recent poll conducted by Be Wiser Insurance.

Mark Bower-Dyke, chairman of Be Wiser Insurance, comments:

"Many see harsher punishments as a deterrent to those who break the law by speeding or driving recklessly - but often, those breaking the law in this way don't even consider the punishment, they're more likely to be focused on reaching their destination. Perhaps the government needs to look at increasing the severity of penalties for speeding and reckless driving – and at the same time they should publicise these increased penalties to educate drivers that they risk losing their licence and/or racking up higher penalty points. Both of which will cost the driver – by payment of immediate fines followed by a likely increase in their insurance premiums from the addition of penalty points to their licence."

Interestingly, traffic calming measures seemed least popular; only 6% of respondents thought that these would make UK roads safer and only 9% of people polled said roads would be safer if the speed limit was reduced.

Mark Bower-Dyke comments:

"Traffic calming measures can be useful for slowing down traffic in some areas, but the response here appears to suggest that many think reducing speed is no longer directly linked with safety."

Nearly a third (29%) responded that tougher driving tests would make better drivers and therefore safer roads – the suggestion appears to be that the current driving test fails to produce new drivers who are able to cope with the demands and stresses of “modern day” motoring.

Others suggested that passing a test isn't enough to ensure someone will obey the rules once they're out on the road on their own.

Mark Bower-Dyke comments:

"Whatever changes are made there will always be a minority who drive in a reckless manner. We can’t stress how important it is to make sure you’ve got the best cover when driving. Motor insurance from Be Wiser ensures that you are covered by one of the UK’s top insurance companies, and all cover supplied by Be Wiser includes legal protection and breakdown cover as standard - making any unfortunate situation that little bit less stressful."
