A motorist fined £175 (plus £200 costs) by the police for warning oncoming drivers of a police speed trap may not have been helping despite public support says Be Wiser Insurance.

Nearly three quarters (72%) of respondents to a recent Be Wiser poll agreed the driver, Mr. Thompson, was doing his "civic duty."

Mark Bower-Dyke, chairman of Be Wiser Insurance, comments:

"Mr. Thompson clearly means well - many respondents suggested he was "just being kind." Instinctively we all want to applaud his actions; yet he could have been giving dangerously mixed signals by flashing his lights at oncoming motorists."

Over a quarter (28%) of those polled believe Mr. Thompson was obstructing the police from doing their job.

Mark Bower-Dyke comments:

"There is no real way of knowing if any of the drivers Mr. Thompson warned understood his message. The nature of flashed headlights is open to interpretation on the road."

The Highway Code states that you should "Only flash your headlights to let other road users know that you are there."  A signal for a motorist to pull out of a side road could be taken as the "all clear" by another. When accidents occur in these situations it can become messy quickly.

Mark Bower-Dyke concludes:

"Be Wiser encourage motorists to consider driving a social situation - and as such it is always best to make sure your signals are clear enough to be understood."
