The ever-popular 12-year-old General Tufto prepares for his 200th career start in a Southwell handicap before Christmas.

In a week when a new pretender emerged for the Middle Distance crown, one veteran was competing in his 200th race. Meanwhile, jockey Fran Berry had five reasons to be happy on a busy day at Southwell and Wolverhampton.

JACK’S THE LAD IN LINGFIELD FEATURE

Lingfield Park’s Listed Quebec Stakes on Saturday 23rd December went to course specialist PETITE JACK, who scored his most important career success to stay on track for a tilt at the winter’s two biggest races, the Winter Derby and the Easter Classic. Trained by upwardly mobile young handler Archie Watson, he came through horses under a well timed ride by leading jockey Luke Morris to beat a stellar field.

TUFTO CELEBRATES A DOUBLE CENTURY

GENERAL TUFTO may only compete at a modest level, but the popular 17 times winner who regularly receives fan mail and gifts, celebrated his 200th career start in a Southwell handicap before Christmas. A framed montage of some of his more notable course wins was presented to his trainer Charles Smith and devoted owner John Theaker afterwards. The evergreen 12-year-old was set to re-appear at his favourite track on New Year’s Day.

IRISH JOCKEY BERRY LANDS REMARKABLE FIVE TIMER

FRAN BERRY had a day to remember when he rode five winners at two different fixtures before Christmas. He completed a treble at Southwell in the afternoon before adding a double at Wolverhampton’s evening fixture, taking the feature sprint handicap on Good Friday contender Gracious John for trainer David Evans. “It was one of those days when everything just fell into place,” said the busy freelance.
