As a van driver, you’ll need to have a van insurance policy in place to cover you against a number of risks relating to your van. Usually, a van insurance policy provides cover if your van is stolen or damaged or if you cause any injury or damage to another person or their property. It’s important to ensure that you have the right van insurance policy and usage cover, especially if the vehicle is used for business purposes. If you are at all unsure as to which cover and vehicle use you need, you can always speak to our insurance advisors who will be able to help you.
What your van insurance covers mainly depends on what you will be using your van for and the type of insurance policy that fits your needs. There are three types of van insurance cover available:
Third Party Only
Third party cover is the minimum legal level of insurance you need in the UK to cover your van. This insurance policy covers the cost of any damage or injury caused to another vehicle, person or their property. However, this does not cover or provide any financial assistance for any damage caused to your own van (such as repair costs) or any injury caused to you in an accident.
Third Party, Fire and Theft
This offers the same level of cover as third party insurance. In addition to that, you’ll also be covered if your van is damaged through fire or if it gets stolen.
Comprehensive insurance is the most complete level of cover you can get for your van. It provides cover for any damage or loss to your own vehicle, including third party, fire and theft.
Keep in mind that standard insurance might not fully cover you if you are using your van for commercial or business purposes. Some examples of van insurance for business use can be seen below:
Carriage of own goods
A carriage of own goods insurance policy covers your van when carrying your own goods for business purposes. If you wish to cover your tools or contents of your van then this would require a separate policy, as van contents are not covered on a standard van insurance policy.
Carriage of goods for hire and reward
This policy type covers your van when carrying other people or goods that are not for your own business purposes and in return for payment.
Courier Van Insurance & Haulage Van Insurance
The courier and haulage business van policy provides cover for the transporting of goods over long distances. For example, when importing or exporting goods. It’s important to note the difference between a courier and a haulier to ensure you take out the correct policy. A courier will usually deliver between 40-80 parcels per day to many different locations, while a haulier will complete a single run and drop off the entire load at a location such as a warehouse or distribution centre. A haulier may complete a few of these runs per day.
Yes, you can! Here are a variety of extra business insurance covers you may want to consider to protect your van and your business:
- No Claims Bonus protection
- Breakdown and legal assistance cover
- Courtesy van
If any of these features are important to you or your business, then it may be worth considering adding them to your policy.
